Adults can be defined as animals or human beings which have attained their maximum growth and development. The term adult is used in the context of human beings in order to define the legal and social aspects. Contrary to the term "minor" (or "non-adult" an legal adult is a person who has achieved the age of majority. They are regarded as competent, responsible and independent. An adult who is legally mature can be called a major. It is generally accepted that the age at which a person becomes a legal adult is 18. It is possible for this to vary depending on legal rights and the country of origin as well as psychological development.

When a human reaches full physical and intellectual maturity, it is referred to as adulthood. Commonly, adulthood begins around the age of 21 or 20. Following middle age (starting at around 40) is the time to reach older age (around the age of 60). In adulthood there are three distinct stages early adulthood (18-30 years) and Middle Adulthood (30-60 years) and Late adulthood (60%-60 60%). As we enter the initial phases of adulthood (between 20 and 40) the bodies of our children have reached full maturation even though the weight and height of our bodies might increase a bit. As we grow older, we are at the top of our physical capabilities.
